NORTHWESTERN STATE UNIVERSITY

SOCIAL WORK PROGRAM at The Learning Center for Rapides Parish

NORTHWESTERN STATE UNIVERSITY – CENLA

SOCIAL WORK PROGRAM

Northwestern State University-Cenla Programs (NSU-Cenla) at England Airpark offers a Social Work Program which results in a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) degree.  NSU- Cenla is located at the Learning Center for Rapides Parish. The BSW is a 4-year degree program.  After completing two years of core courses, students may apply for admission into the professional social work program.  Students in Central Louisiana are able to complete the last two years of the BSW degree in the professional social work program in Alexandria through a combination of face-to-face, internet, and compressed video classes.   Typically students in the Cenla area obtain the first two years of core courses through Northwestern State University, utilizing a combination of face-to-face, internet, and compressed video classes; or, by completing the core course work at another local college in the area.  All of the core courses are available on the NSU Natchitoches campus and some are offered at the Cenla campus.  Many of these courses are offered on the internet.  Any student who intends to complete the last two years of BSW work at the NSU Cenla campus are strongly encouraged to meet with a NSU Cenla campus advisor early in their college studies.

The BSW program prepares students for employment in entry-level generalist social work practice or for continued academic pursuit of the Masters of Social Work (MSW) degree. In the BSW program, skills acquired enable graduates to work successfully with individuals and families, groups, and organizations.  Students learn about human behavior and its relationship to the social environment, social welfare policy, social work research, and human diversity.  An important component of the educational process involves completing a field placement in an agency that delivers social work services.  In this placement, the student experiences the real world of social work practice.  The “Field Instruction” (SOWK 4190) course must be taken concurrently with SOWK4040 (Research Methods) as the student completes an agency-based research project.  Students in the Cenla area have excellent field placement agencies from which to choose.

Students wishing to complete their BSW program on the Cenla campus should plan to begin their professional courses in a fall semester, as the courses are offered once a year and are sequenced, beginning with the fall semester.
